LET IT FLOW.

I offer editorial and legal research services. My editorial service involves reviewing the spelling, grammar, structure and coherence of your draft as well as making sure it complies with whatever style guide may apply. As part of this service I may also be able to comment on the substantive aspects of your work, depending on the subject matter.

My services are regularly sought by legal scholars for a range of content including book chapters, journal articles, grant applications/ competition bids, reports, and presentation materials.

All work accepted is carried out by me - a London-based legal researcher and editor with twenty years' worth of experience in law- and policy-related work, and co-author of one book and multiple legal journal articles on international legal matters (cf., FAQ section). You and I will be in direct contact throughout the process.

I also offer legal research services. This may be of interest to legal scholars. My professional experience as policy advisor at the UK Ministry of Justice, research associate at Queen Mary, University of London, and associate editor at a global legal publishers, has heavily involved researching and reporting on discreet and broader legal and policy issues. I have researched and written on a variety of topics concerning domestic and international law, thus contributing to government policy and scholarly opinion. I have a particular interest in areas of public international law including sources theory, treaty law, and state responsibility and sovereignty, and particular experience in areas of international law and regulation (including energy governance, investment protection, and the EU, UN and WTO legal regimes).

Indicatively, the starting/base rate for editing is GBP 25 per 1,000 words. The applicable rate depends on the quality of your draft. I will confirm the applicable rate after I have reviewed a sample of your draft. For legal research the rate is GBP 40 per hour (cf., FAQs section).

FAQs

CAN YOU HELP ME WITH MY COURSEWORK?

In short, yes, however, this will depend on what you have in mind, and what level of involvement is permitted by your institution.

For instance, in addition to addressing spelling, grammatical, and syntactical issues, my editorial service also looks at whether your work is well-argued and coherent, flows well, and complies with applicable style guides. My service also includes comment (typically, side comments tracked in MS Word) to highlight potential issues with your draft and to suggest ways for you to put your point across more effectively. It may be necessary that you rephrase particular passages, or that I do so without altering the substance of your work or distorting your own 'voice'.

If you are a student, you should check your educational institution's policy beforehand as you may not be allowed to have a third party involved in your work. That said, I should still be able to go through your draft to identify and highlight any issues with tone, register, coherence, and reasoning before considering how best to tackle these in line with applicable rules.

HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT CHANGES TO MY DRAFT?

All edits - including insertions, deletions and comments - are tracked in MS Word.

Your work is returned to you by the agreed turn-around date in two versions: your original draft with all edits tracked for you to go through and decide whether to implement, and a finalised, clean version with all edits accepted for your ease. Both versions retain any comments I may have left in the margins that require your further attention.

WHAT SPELLING DO YOU APPLY?

The default spelling is UK English unless it is clear from your draft that you have opted for US English spelling or the applicable style guide dictates so. Do let me know beforehand what you prefer.

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE, WHAT DO I GET AND WHEN/HOW DO I PAY?

Let's discuss your specific needs once you have sent me your draft and I've had the opportunity to get a sense of the level of editing and amount of time necessary.

Indicatively, for my editorial service, the starting/base rate is GBP 25 per 1,000 words; this means that a higher rate may be applicable, depending on the amount of time and attention likely required. This entitles you to one review of your draft by me. Any further input on my part is remunerated at GBP 40 per hour. Typically, I spend between 30 minutes to an hour on dealing with follow-up queries etc.

For much shorter documents (e.g., cover letters and CVs) I charge a flat rate of GBP 40.00 per document, provided that it does not exceed two pages at font size 12, when properly spaced (i.e.,  a minimum of one space between lines of text within conventional margin settings)

For legal research work, I charge GBP 40 per hour

Payment for editing is typically in advance by bank transfer to my UK bank account, and work commences upon receipt of payment. However, let's discuss payment arrangements when confirming terms.

WHEN WILL THE WORK BE COMPLETED?

Again, we can discuss this at the time of confirming terms. I do recommend, however, that you approach me well in advance of any deadline to accommodate your request within my existing workload. It's best to contact me as soon as you realise you may need my input so that we discuss timing, even if your draft is not ready to share with me by that point.

Students should let me have drafts at least a fortnight before submission to factor any in time that may be needed to consider my edits or any follow-up involvement.

WHAT ARE YOUR ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS?

LL.B (Hons.) and LL.M (Public International Law)

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE?

I have seven years' worth of public-sector experience (namely, at the UK Ministry of Justice and its predecessor and associated agencies), much of which had involved research and drafting a range of content for a variety of audiences, e.g., ministerial correspondence, policy-related documents, online and printed resources, ministerial briefing notes etc. All of this work had related to the law.

Additionally, I have thirteen years' worth of academic legal research and editorial experience comprising drafting and editing law-related documents including research papers, research grant proposals, and dissertation and doctoral theses, that has resulted in co-authored legal journal articles and a book on international legal matters. I have also edited draft book chapters and research papers that were subsequently published by, among others, CUP and OUP.

DO YOU OUTSOURCE?

No - all work accepted is carried out by me; no-one else has a hand in the review process. You and I will be in direct contact throughout the process as and when necessary.

Lastly, I am unable to recommend any alternative services should I be unavailable to fulfil a request for my services.
